Impact of shrimp farming

  • The shrimp industry in India provides livelihood to approximately 60,000 farmers directly involved in the shrimp farming activities and further the benefit is passed on to their respective families.
  • Hence, when a consumer purchases 1 kg of shrimp he or she directly contributes for the ration of one meal to the fishermen family.
  • In addition to that, shrimp farming also gives employment to millions of individuals in the form of labor requirement, technicians, input suppliers such as feed, seed, healthcare, infrastructure development, processing plants, machinery suppliers and food vendors.
  • A hectare of land gives employment and benefits to approximately 8 to 10 individuals across the shrimp industry value chain.

  • Nurtures and grows the shrimp with giving feed and takes care of shrimp health by measuring water quality parameters, feeding management, laboratory testing for pathogens and uses healthcare inputs to maintain shrimp health status.
  • When the shrimp reaches harvestable size, the farmer harvest the shrimp by taking proper biosecurity and sanitary measures and also maintains cleanliness throughout the harvesting by following the SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures).
